The Battle of the MarneBefore the Battle of the Marne, the Allied troops were in a massive retreat on the Western Front. After days of retreating with the German army in pursuit, French General Joseph Joffre ordered the armies to turn around and launch a counter attack. They surprised the German army and sent troops through a gap in the German defense. The Germans saw the situation slip out of control and the Germans Retreated. This was General Joffre's greatest accomplishment during the war.

The Bolshevik RevolutionThroughout the war, the hostility towards the Tsar grew. Morale was low, and there were shortages of food and fuel in the country. Hundreds of thousands of workers went on strike, and at the request of his advisers the Tsar abdicated. At first the Russian soldiers stayed on the front due to the hatred of Germany, but soon the Russian army collapsed in confusion with mutinies and desertions. This officially put Russia out of the war.
